Father Who Beat Daughter With Hammer Is Sentenced - 05-09-2008
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) - A man accused of hitting his adoptive daughter's fingers with a hammer and throwing one of his adoptive sons off a roof was sentenced to 65 years in prison Friday.
Clark County Common Pleas Court Judge Richard O'Neill sentenced James Ferguson, convicted last month of felonious assault, child endangerment and permitting child abuse.
Ferguson, 48, of Springfield, was accused of abusing five of his six adopted children.

Children's Health Clinic To Close Doors At Month's End - 05-09-2008
The Allen County Board of Health voting this morning to shut down the Children's Health Clinic, and not all members were confident about the decision.
The clinic which has been providing services to under-privileged youth since the early 1970's, will close it's doors at the end of the month.

Impeachment For Dann Not Advised - 05-09-2008
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Urging impeachment was a radical step that Ohio Democrats are ill-advised to carry through, a former longtime chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party said Friday.
"There has been a reason for not doing this for 200 years. The people back then were smart people too, and they realized that it is not an efficient or effective tool," said Paul Tipps, who led the state party for eight years.

Judge Rules Against Tobacco Lawsuit - 05-09-2008
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A judge has ruled against the dismissal of a lawsuit by a Washington-based foundation claiming a portion of Ohio's tobacco use prevention funds.
The ruling Thursday keeps alive the American Legacy Foundation's claim to $190 million of the Ohio Tobacco Prevention Foundation's funds. The Ohio foundation was dissolved this week after Gov. Ted Strickland signed a bill transferring its remaining $40 million in funds to the state Department of Health.

Governor Reconsiders Impeachment of Dann - 05-09-2008
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland is leaving the door open for not going through impeachment proceedings against Attorney General Marc Dann.
Strickland says he won't support impeachment against the fellow Democrat if there's no credible evidence that Dann committed a serious crime in a sexual harassment scandal in his office. Republican lawmakers in the House have been working on outlining the process for impeachment.

Wrong Way Crash Driver Pleads No Contest - 05-09-2008
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - A Michigan man has pleaded no contest and was found guilty of charges in a wrong-way crash in Toledo that killed a mother and four children from Maryland.
Police say Michael Gagnon (GAG'-nuhn) of Adrian, Mich., was driving drunk and in the wrong direction on a Toledo interstate Dec. 30 when his pickup truck hit a minivan filled with eight people coming home from a Christmas trip.

Around 300 physicians, critical care nurses and other health professionals, heard speakers on a wide-range of cardiovascular topics. The group heard about heart failure, congestive heart disease, and a new option for imaging the heart and coronary arteries.

Father David Ross Returns to Serve Two Lima Catholic Parishes - 05-08-2008
One pastor is coming home, the other is going home. Father Bill Rose of St. Rose and St. John's Catholic Churches in Lima announced today he'll be leaving to be the Pastor of Christ The King Church in Toledo.
Rose says the departure is bittersweet, having spent 8 years in Lima. He is originally from Toledo. Replacing Rose is a familiar face who will be Father David Ross.

Dayton Police Shoot Man Not Involved with Robbery - 05-08-2008
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - The man shot and killed by police after a chase in Dayton this week was apparently not involved in two robberies that led to the chase to begin with.
Montgomery County sheriff's Maj. Greg Laravie said Thursday that even though 44-year-old Lary Labensky of suburban Kettering was driving a stolen car, deputies would not have pursued him had they known he was not a suspect in the robberies.

Cicadas Invade Cincinnati - 05-08-2008
CINCINNATI (AP) - The wakeup of millions of ugly, loud but essentially harmless periodical cicadas has started a few days earlier than expected.
Each brood usually emerges every 17 years when the ground temperature reaches about 65 degrees. But some have already been sighted around Cincinnati.
By next week, there will be millions of them.
Experts say they do not carry diseases and do not sting or bite people.

Defiance Based Orphanage Threatened by Cyclone - 05-08-2008
DEFIANCE, Ohio (AP) - Over the last year, members of the Family Christian Center church have sold pies and raised money to pay for the construction of an orphanage in Myanmar's largest city.
Now they are praying that the orphanage withstood the devastating cyclone that hit the Southeast Asian country last weekend.
The orphanage in Yangon was almost complete, Sue Nofziger, a member of the church's mission team.

Sick Day Legislation Fails To Make Deadline - 05-08-2008
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A coalition that wants to require most Ohio businesses to give their employees paid sick days says it wants to put the issue on the November ballot.
State lawmakers did not meet Thursday's deadline to act on the proposal.
Ohioans for Healthy Families gathered 154,693 valid signatures, which was enough to present the issue to lawmakers in January.

Ohio Top Court to Hear Lima Residency Case - 05-08-2008
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio Supreme Court will decide whether cities have the right to require police officers and other employees to live within city limits.
The high court agreed yesterday to hear appeals brought by the cities of Lima and Akron, where officials have fought a 2006 state law that blocked cities from imposing residency requirements.
The cities argue that home rule powers ensure their right to set the mandates.

CLEVELAND (AP) - It's time for Papa John's Pizza to make good on its promise to sell a large, one-topping pizza for 23 cents in Ohio.
Eighty-six stores in Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo and Youngstown are in on the deal, each prepared to sell more than 900 pies on Thursday.
The Louisville, Ky.-based company agreed to the deal as an apology to Cleveland Cavaliers fans after a franchisee in Washington, D.C.

Cause of Death Undetermined for Man Dragged - 05-08-2008
IRONTON, Ohio (AP) - A coroner says he can't determine the cause of death for a southern Ohio man dragged beneath a police cruiser in March.
The autopsy report on 46-year-old Guy Thomas says it's not clear if he was alive or already dead when Ironton police Officer Richard Fouts' cruiser drove over the man on a snow-covered street and dragged him for about a half mile.

Strickland Signs Bill That May Help Cancer Patients - 05-07-2008
Ohio Governor Ted Strickland signed Senate Bill 186 yesterday, which prohibits certain insurance plans from denying coverage to patients participating in cancer clinical trials. In a big step for all clinical trials in the state, Governor Strickland approved a bill which will require insurance companies to cover routine costs associated with experimental cancer trials.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Forever stamp is a very popular item this week at post offices in Ohio and throughout the U.S. and its territories.
The stamp with the Liberty Bell now costs 41 cents, and you can continue to use it after the cost of mailing a letter goes up to 42 cents on Monday.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Services for a shooting victim in Cleveland were interrupted when mourners spotted a suspect at the funeral home.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - A former banker who embezzled nearly $49 million from a small-town bank in northwest Ohio will get out of prison four years earlier than he expected.
A judge agreed to reduce the sentence for Mark Miller after prosecutors say he cooperated with the government in a related case.
An attorney for the former chief executive of the Oakwood Deposit Bank says he could now be released in three and a half years.

SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) - Two State Highway Patrol troopers have now lost their jobs over a prank involving what looked like a Ku Klux Klan outfit.
A patrol spokesman announced Monday that Craig Franklin and Eric Wlodarsky of the Sandusky post were terminated. Lt. Tony Bradshaw also says there was just cause for discipline.
