OHIO BALLOT ERRORS

More Ohio voting by mail means more mistakes

CLEVELAND (AP) - Elections officials in major Ohio counties say a surge in people voting by mail has been accompanied by a rise in ballot errors that cost time and money.

More than 6,000 voters in the county that includes Cleveland made mistakes with mail-in ballots for the May primary. Some left off necessary signatures or information, while nearly 100 even forgot to include their ballot in the envelope.

Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH'-guh) County elections workers try to fix errors so votes can be counted, and the process can be costly. Officials are already urging that mail-in ballot instructions be followed carefully for the November election.

County elections officials in Columbus say simpler rules would cut down on slip-ups. Any changes would be up to the Ohio Legislature.

BITTEN BABY

Police: Ohio baby who died had adult bite marks

TROY, Ohio (AP) - Police in Ohio say an 8-month-old baby who died from multiple injuries appeared to have adult bite marks, including one on the leg.

A police report on the death of Caleb Durig says officers in Troy in western Ohio also found blood on the floor and the infant's crib. They went to the home Monday in response to a 911 call from parents Jason and Tara Durig, who said the boy was not breathing.

An autopsy found the baby died from multiple blunt force trauma. Detectives said in their report that they found many bruises and signs of possible strangulation, and that the child may have been dead for some time.

The Durigs have been charged with felony child endangering and are each being held on $50,000 bond. Court records do not list attorneys for them.

CAR SMOKING BAN

Ohio town drops proposed car smoking ban

WASHINGTON C.H., Ohio (AP) - An Ohio community has pulled back on banning smoking in cars when children are passengers.

The city council in Washington Court House gave tentative approval to the proposal on a 4-2 vote July 14. But last night, the measure was put aside because two council members decided to change their earlier yes votes.

Councilman Ben Roby says he decided to drop his support for the ban because he found more "public interest" in the proposal than he ever expected.

Before the council meeting, about 10 people held a noisy street corner protest against the ban. They held signs with messages including "Say no to more government control" and "What's next? Your home?"

The plan's supporters had said their goal was to protect children from secondhand smoke.

POLICE CRUISER-DEATH

Cincinnati officer in park death had good record

CINCINNATI (AP) - City officials and personnel records give good reviews to the veteran Cincinnati police officer authorities say fatally drove over a woman lying in a park.

City parks director Willie Carden says 53-year-old Marty Polk was sensitive to the needs of residents and the parks. Polk's latest police evaluations have been positive overall, with high grades for community partnerships and decision-making.

Records also show he was in a minor traffic accident in 1990 that caused $500 damage.

Forty-eight-year-old Joann Burton was lying under some blankets on a grassy area at midday Tuesday when Polk's cruiser ran over her. She died at a hospital.

As the investigation continues, Polk has been placed on paid leave, customary for officers involved in an on-duty death.

MIDWEST STORMS-POLICE STATION

Police station ruined by Ohio twister to be redone

MILLBURY, Ohio (AP) - A northwest Ohio police station destroyed by a tornado last month will be rebuilt in hopes of opening in the fall of next year.

Lake Township trustees voted last night to use an estimated $1.7 million in insurance money to replace the township administration building, which housed the police department and other offices.

The building was in the path of a tornado with winds up to 175 mph that struck the area near Toledo on June 5. Six people were killed.

The trustees plan to include a storm memorial in the new administration building and are currently taking designs and bids.

The old police headquarters will be demolished in coming weeks.

Several police cruisers left mangled by the tornado will be used for car-crash rescue training.

BENGALS-TO

T.O. misses flight to Bengals camp

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (AP) - Terrell Owens is a late arrival.

The Cincinnati Bengals' latest addition missed his overnight flight and had to take a later one today, delaying his debut during the first day of workouts at training camp.

The Bengals had planned on him arriving early in the day, taking his physical and signing his contract while the rest of the team worked out in the morning. They'd scheduled an introductory news conference after the morning practice, then expected him to join in an evening workout.

The news conference has been rescheduled until after the evening practice.
