   Weather Q & A
A. This is something that most people probably cannot answer accurately. The obvious similarities are that all of these imply ice in some shape or form, but there are distinct differences between the three. First, both sleet and freezing rain are forms of winter weather precipitation, while hail develops within the convective processes in thunderstorms. In the winter months, most, if not all precipitation begins as a snowflake.

A. The ring of light you saw is called a "halo" which can be seen around either the sun or the moon.  In this case, everything was in place atmospherically for a quite visible moon halo.Moon halos generally occur when there are lots of ice crystals in the upper levels of the atmosphere.  Skies were generally clear, but there was plenty of moisture in the upper levels of the atmosphere in the form of ice crystals, which refracted the moonlight into a bright ring of light around the moon.

A. This is a great question because we hear the term very often during severe weather season.  Strong thunderstorms frequently have strong downdrafts associated with them.   A downdraft is basically a column of sinking air in a thunderstorm.  When there is a particularly strong downdraft, we call it a downburst, or microburst.  These microbursts contain significantly rain-cooled air and upon impact with the surface, the air moves outward in all directions.

Ohio is on the far eastern edge of this imaginary bounded area, which includes real estate from the western plain states, eastward through the Mississippi Valley, to the Gulf coast, and northward into the Ohio Valley.. west of the Appalachians. This area was designated such, because the highest number of tornados typically form in this part of the country, due to a unique set up.

A.     Well we all know that in order to get a rainbow to form, we need two ingredients, sunlight and water droplets, but not necessarily in the same location.     Rainbows are most commonly seen in the summer months, when showers and thunderstorms quickly come and go, followed by a quick return to some sunshine. These storms are driven by daytime heating, and typically form in the late afternoon and early evening hours.
