Late Season Tropical Storm Forms in Western Caribbean - 11-04-2009

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Ida has formed in the southwestern Caribbean, prompting storm warnings for the coast of Nicaragua and two Colombian islands.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the 9th named storm of the 2009 season has sustained winds near 60 mph, with higher gusts.

As of 4:00 p.m. ET, the storm's center is about 75 miles east of Bluefields, Nicaragua. It is moving toward the northwest near 6 mph.

Colombia issued tropical storm warnings for the islands of San Andres and Providencia.

Ida should hit Nicaragua on Thursday, according to Weather Channel meteorologist Chris Dolce. He added that if the forecast holds, as much as 25 inches of rain could fall in Nicaragua and Honduras, likely triggering life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.

After hitting land in central America, Ida could reform in the northwest Caribbean early next week, said Dolce.
